Royal Oak

• Young’s Chinese Food Carryout: So it was that we found ourselves in Royal Oak, Michigan one night. Young’s was just a block down the road and the Siren’s call of Chinese takeaway was hard to resist. Off we went for a stroll on a warm Saturday night. Young’s is located in a non-descript beige rectangle of a building next to a liquor store on Eleven Mile Road. It is decidedly, as its name suggests, carryout only. There is no dinning room. The store front consists of a counter with two stations for order placement and pick up, a window counter with chairs for sitting and waiting, and a upright glass fronted fridge of cold drinks for sale. The menu, though small by Chinese restaurant standards, is comprehensive and loaded with Chinese classics. On this night, our choices were a pint of the Hot and Sour Soup, Beef with Broccoli, Ku Bo Shrimp (their spelling of kung pao shrimp), 2 Eggrolls (has bay shrimps), and 2 Spring Rolls (all veggie). The food was fantastic! Bountiful (rice came with each entre) and well flavored. It was an unexpected delight and a joy to eat! The soup packed a nice spicy kick and the acid of the vinegar playfully stings your nose and tastebuds. The soup is not vegetarian, strips of julienned chicken swims along with the egg drops, mushrooms, tofu, and bamboo shoots. The entrees both were satisfying and comforting. The “ku bo shrimp” was not spicy, but the taste was a nicely balanced and there were medium and large sized shrimps a-plenty (about a dozen or so). The beef with broccoli was equally delightful, the beef dipped in corn starch and stir fried to a perfect tender finish, the broccoli playing the perfect carrier of the dark brown sauce. It was a thoroughly enjoyable carryout eat in your hotel room experience and, were i to find myself again back in Royal Oak, Michigan, Young’s would be the place i would go to explore the various other items on their menu!
