Ashley’s: Recommended by a MBC denizen who has roots in Michigan, Ashley’s is a beer lover’s heaven and haven. Perusing Ashley’s Beer Menu is an exercise, and a thirsty one indeed! Don’t get me started on the whiskeys, my, what a selection/collection/hedonistic assembly of the distiller’s craft they have! They also serve food, but i didn’t manage to leave the libations quite just yet. No dress code, reservations are available.
Knight’s Steak House Downtown Ann Arbor (but two other locations are available): Located on the popular Liberty Street, Knights serves up delicious and well cooked meats and large stiff cocktails. It is your quintessential American eatery with dishes that reflects the variety within the 50 states. The steaks are cooked perfectly to temperature and generous in portions, the burgers are juicy and plump. Really hard to go wrong to explore the menu with good cheer and ample hunger! No dress code, reservations are highly recommended.
Miss Kim: Off the Farmer’s Market in Kerry Town, Miss Kim declares that they have “Really Great Korean Food and Drink” and i, for one, will not be disputing that claim. The food is solid and delicious, the flavors on point if just a tad toned down. The Tteokbokki is well executed, with chewy delicious rice cakes covered in a lovely sweet and savory sauce. The slow cooked poached egg adds a bit of richness when the yolk is released and the entire dish is fun and addictive to eat. The Buns, house made Chinese style buns stuffed with a thick slice of decadent slow cooked pork belly or Korean fried chicken tender on a bed of sliced and lightly pickled cucumber makes a perfect snack or lunch. Of course, do sample the Korean Fried Chicken, the glazes offered (sweet chili, sweet soy, or Korean chili spice) are all sticky tasty and impactful, complementing the crisp fried chicken with penetrating flavor. No dress code, reservations are recommended.
Taste Kitchen: Located on Liberty Street in Ann Arbor, Taste Kitchen is an unassuming restaurant offering local farm to table ingredients prepared with a global flair. You will find a touch of Asian culinary notes and a hint of classical French rubbing shoulders with a mélange of flavors from across the world in the dishes at Taste Kitchen. The wine list is not vast but fun to explore, the bar is well stocked and the cocktails well made and plentiful. A great place to entertain or be entertained with an attentive and warm staff that are prompt without seeming to be rushed or flustered. The menu changes regularly and seasonally. No dress code, reservations highly recommended.
Zingerman’s Deli: Can’t come to Ann Arbor and not stop off at Zingerman’s Deli. Their vast array of sandwich options is sure to please your cravings and wants. i always know that i can get a very good Pastrami Reuben and Kreplach at Zingerman’s. Granted, the Cole Slaw and the Hot Dog are like Sirens, drawing you on the the shoals of overeating at all times. Best not to mention the Chicken Broth with a cannonball sized (optional, but really, how can you not?) Matzo Ball as it will surely take you from very full to stuffed to the gills. Oh, and don’t forget the baked goods. They too, are very very good. No dress code, seating available onsite or take-away. It is a deli, granted, a very bountiful deli.
